Branding - an introduction

Branding, what is it? It is having a nice logo? A good-looking website or advertising on a big billboard? Or is it having templates that you use for Instagram?

Businesses looking to grow their brand often chose getting a new logo quickly in the hope that it’ll bring them new business. But when not really knowing what branding is and how you can use it to your advantage, you’ll always end up back at the same point as you started. So, here it is: your introduction to branding and discover how you can use it in your advantage.

What is branding?

Branding - in the ancient early days - was used to distinguish one from another. In some tribes they used different kind of patterns and colours to distinguish them from other tribes and you can look at facial paintings as part of their personal branding.

Definition (Cambridge Dictionary):

The activity of connecting a product with a particular name, symbol, etc. or with particular features or ideas, in order to make people recognise and want to buy it.

But nowadays the definition is a little bit outdated and incomplete. It’s more than that. Branding is indeed connecting a product or service to the combination of colour, text & shapes, but it’s also the process of creating and guiding these perceptions.

With strong branding you build up recognition with your potential customers, which makes it easier for them to choose you when they need your product / services.

But successful branding isn’t created overnight.

Not just a logo

One of the misconceptions businesses have when thinking of branding, is that they only need a logo. Colours, typography, supporting graphics and imagery are often being looked over. But they are just as - sometimes even more - important as having a logo.

Say coffee and green and Starbucks pops into mind.

Say interior and seeing blue and yellow, you can’t think of an other brand than Ikea.

Successful branding is being used in almost every aspect of your business - from management to your staff to your visual expressions. When done right, branding can be a strong base to grow your brand.

The base to grow your brand

Creating a strong base for your brand doesn’t have to be complicated. Defining who you are as a business and setting your values is the first thing you need to do. These values are the foundation that influences everything you do and everything will feel the same when your (potential) customers interact with your business.
